This illustrates the freedom enjoyed by the children in those times, once a year, on the Nature Outing with their school.  Away from the town and traffic, they were able to run about and get into all kinds of scrapes; chase the girls with a frog, inspect a hedgehog at close quarters, climb trees and make fun of the girl who caught her dress on the fence and showed her knickers.   Not quite so funny though, was getting stung by a nettle.  Everyone had to search round for a dock leaf to soothe the sting.  The problem was that no-one but the teacher knew what a dock leaf looked like and, anyway, they never seemed to be growing anywhere near the nettles!
