Steam train at Grange over Sands in the Lake District. No. 2308 was an L.M.S. 2-6-4 tank engine, one of a class of 125 designed by Henry Fowler, and introduced in 1927.   Power rated 4P (passenger) they worked throughout the system on passenger and freight trains.  In the North West they regularly worked semi-fast passenger services until the mid 1960’s and were used to "bank" the heavy express trains over Shap.  However the introduction of the more powerful diesel locomotives made them redundant.

No. 2308 was shedded at Barrow-in-Furness and it is pictured in its pre-war condition at the head of a local train through Grange-Over-Sands on Morecambe Bay.
