Fabric Paint Hints and Tips and Information

Setacolor colours can be used on all fabrics, fine or heavy: cotton, wool, velvet, non-woven and even leather. Ready to use, intense and concentrated, they are used pure or diluted with water to obtain watercolour effects. Setacolor colours are suitable for various techniques.

Vivid and bright, the Setacolor Opaque colours have an exceptional covering power to decorate both dark or light coloured fabrics. Their rich texture is especially suited for brush work, stencil work and even silkscreen printing.

The new Setacolor Shimmering Opaque colours are particularly spectacular! Their rich and deep shades are glittering and have a subtle brightness with changing effects depending on the light. It is not recommended to dilute the shimmering colours in order to keep their brightness.

The Setacolor transparent colours are suitable for all techniques to decorate light coloured fabrics. Though lighter in texture than the Setacolor opaque range, they are perfectly suited for brush work, stencil work or silkscreen printing, and are especially appropriate for diluted techniques. The Setacolor transparent paints are light-sensitive and can therefore be used to obtain remarkable effects with sunlight (2 parts water for one part colour). Setacolor can be applied on fabric free of sizing and the decorated fabrics keep their suppleness. To fix the Setacolor colours, iron on the reverse side of the decorated fabric for 3 minutes on cotton position. It is also possible to put the fabric in a kitchen oven : 5 minutes at 150 °C (300 °F) and the colours are fixed. Once fixed, the designs resist machine washing and dry cleaning.

THE AUXILIARIES for Fabric Painting

Specially formulated to be used in combination with the Setacolor colours, this new range of auxiliary products allows you to adapt the colours to different techniques and to enlarge the creative possibilities.

>Lightener for Pebeo Fabric Paint: used to create lighter shades without weakening or thinning the product. Please note that the colours will be less opaque.
Thickener for Pebeo Fabric Paint: specially recommended for stencilling or silk-screen printing work. Briskly mix a few drops of thickener with the colour until you obtain the desired consistency.
Permanent fabric glue : apply with a paint brush on the reverse side of the fabric used to decorate wooden or cardboard objects. This glue is resistant to washing at 40 °C (100 °F).
Expanding relief paste fabric medium: this spectacular product is used to create dimensional patterns. Bright colours : simply apply the paste with a brush, allow to dry and then apply Setacolor paints as desired. Pastel colours : mix the paste with one of the Setacolor paints, then apply as mentioned above. In both cases, allow to dry, then expand by ironing on the reverse side of the fabric or use a hair dryer.
Gold and silver glitter finish fabric paint : Stir the product well, then apply like a varnish over dry Setacolor. For a uniform finish, work with a brush using smooth, broad strokes. Once dry, press with an iron to fix the finish. The fabric may then be hand or machine-washed at 40 °C (100 °F).

FAQ's from Pebeo
Is it necessary to wash the fabric before starting to paint ? If it is new, it is absolutely necessary. The new fabrics are impregnated with sizing, which prevents the paint from penetrating the fibers.
Do the colours go through the fabric ? Yes they do. Think of protecting your work plans with a plastic or a waxed canvas.
Is it normal that the opaque Setacolor colours slightly darken when drying ? Yes. We suggest that you make tests before starting. For this reason, the mixes of colours are delicate to reproduce, so keep them in airtight jars in between each use.
How to fix colours that are directly applied on a lamp shade ? Since it is hard to fix such an object, you can do it in the oven (5 minutes at 150 °C or 300 °F). You can always use a hair dryer.
How come rings have formed on the flat areas painted with colour ? The Setacolor colours can be fluidified with water, but not more than 50%, because they will cause such problems.
How to lighten the colours ? The clear coupure allows you to create lighter shades without thinning or fluidifying the paint.
How to erase a stain ? The Setacolor paint is tenacious, so clean immediately stains with soapy water.
With which other products can Setacolor be used ? Combine the Setacolor colours to the other Pebeo fabric products : Brod'Express, Pebeo Star, Setaskrib
Can we make batiks with Setacolor ? Yes. Setacolor is particularly suitable for this technique. Use liquid wax to create reserves, then apply the colour. To eliminate the wax, iron the fabric by placing it in between two sheets of newspaper.
Can "tie and dye" be realized with Setacolor ? Yes, absolutely. You only have to tie your fabric, then impregnate certain parts of it with the colours of your choice, which were previously diluted. Allow to dry a whole day, then untie an dfix.
What is the sun technique ? On humid and diluted transparent Setacolor colours, put objects of your choice (leaves, branches, plastic forms...). Lay the fabric out flat wise in the sun or under infrared lamps. Once the fabric is dry, remove the objects : the hidden areas
Can the salt technique be used with Setacolor ? This technique works very well with the transparent Setacolor colours. On humid colours, sprinkle fine or large grains of salt. The areas, that come in contact with the grains, are where retraction of the colour appear. Allow to dry, then remove
